IT’S ELECTION TIME
& YOUR
FUTURE IS AT STAKE!
On Nov. 13, 2006 we have municipal elections to put in place a mayor and council for the next FOUR YEARS. (An increased term over the previous 3 year terms). These will be the people who will decide for us, all aspects of new development here. If you own property or live in Collingwood, it’s important to understand the issues. Development is colossal! There’s an estimated 3,000,000 ‘baby-boomers’ living in Ontario’s ‘golden horseshoe’. The front of that ‘boom’ turned 60 this year and the massive ‘boomer-retirement’ phenomenon is already well underway. And it will continue for another dozen years! It is estimated to peak in 2015. Southern Georgian Bay is #1 on their ‘escape to’, list. “The County of Simcoe is the fastest growing county in Ontario and the proliferation of road, infrastructure and housing construction is prevalent everywhere.” Collingwood is currently dealing with development applications that would increase the number of households in town by 70% and Collingwood’s population is calculated to double in the next 20 years. Who we elect for the next 4 years is very important. YOU are a stakeholder in Collingwood’s largest corporation: Your voice matters! The Corporation of the Town of Collingwood is a $30 million corporation that affects your daily life more than anything else. It makes decisions about the roads you drive on, the water you drink, how sewage is handled and about the scope and form of development in your town. It makes decisions about garbage, the library, recreation, culture, policing, fire, the environment and the taxes you’ll pay for these services. Condo owners will receive their mail-in ballots shortly after they are mailed out on October 20. Watch for it! HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED? 1. BE SURE YOU CAN VOTE! You can check online to make sure you are a registered voter, visit www.collingwood.ca/election . 2. KNOW WHO YOU WANT TO VOTE FOR! 3. ATTEND THE ‘ALL CANDIDATES’ PUBLIC MEETINGS. ‘ALL CANDIDATES’ PUBLIC MEETINGS · Wed. Oct.18th at Georgian Manor at 7:00p.m. For all candidates. Mark these on your calendar now! Admission is free! Bring a friend. **** (C.C.R.A.) is a volunteer non-profit group that focuses on ‘Fair Taxation’ & ‘Good Government’. Condo owners are taxed for many services such as garbage pick up, snow removal, street lights, sewer repairs, hydrant repairs, etc. However the Town doesn’t provide them those services. Condominium owners must pay independent contractors for these services. (Can you believe this?). The C.C.R.A , a powerful entity, formed in just the last couple of years now has 79 condominium corporations that belong to CCRA and membership consists of over 5000 voters. That could represent a significant percentage of the voter turn out! We can elect a good municipal government. Don’t let this opportunity slip by! HOW TO LEARN ABOUT THE CANDIDATES: Over the past few months CCRA, (Collingwood Condominium Ratepayers Association) has invited each of the candidates to one of their meetings to provide CCRA with each of their views and opinions on a broad number of local issues. You can learn about the candidates and local issues by being on CCRA’s email distribution. CCRA WILL BE RECOMMENDING CANDIDATES: CCRA will be recommending candidates for consideration through their mailings to all condo owners. If you’d like to receive CCRA’s news emails send your email address to lthompson62@rogers.com or, mail it to Collingwood Condominium Ratepayers Association Suite #520, 115 First St. Collingwood, L9Y 4W3.
