| COLLINGWOOD - The town could combine the role of economic
development with Vision 20/20. |
| On Tuesday, Mayor Terry Geddes said council is still
reviewing the structure of the two committees, and there is the potential
for a 'marrying' together of Vision 20/20 and economic development. |
| The mandate of Vision 20/20, a committee created by the
mayor, concluded at the end of 2000. The mandate of the economic
development advisory committee ended with the term of council, and it was
one of the committees to which people were not named when council made
committee appointments two weeks ago. |
| "from the mayor's perspective, i would personally like
to see the two tied into one committee structure, with
subcommittees," he said. |
| Vision 20/20 was created in early 1999 in response to the
proposed Intrawest development at Blue Mountain. Through research,
and a surveying process which involved more than 1,500 people, the
committee's mandate evolved beyond considering the Intrawest development
to defining how the community wanted to grow over the next 20 years. |
| In Tuesday's E-B, the committee released a brochure
abridged from the more than 100-plus pages of its Blueprint Collingwood
document presented to council and the public in October. |
| Blueprint Collingwood contains more than 200 recommendations covering
areas such as transportation, the downtown, environment, attractions and
housing. |
| Geddes said council has a responsibility to seriously consider
the document prepared by Vision 20/20. He added council will be
"reaffirming the role" of the committee. |
| "It would be very foolish of us not to take the
document seriously - it's a document in which the people of the community
spoke," he said. |
| He added he has met with committee chair Marg Scheben-Edey
and committee co-chair Bob Cook, and assured them the document will be
presented to council in "the near future." |
| Councillor Chris Carrier, who was named to Vision 20/20
with fellow councillor Sonny Foley, said he plans on meeting with Foley to
discuss the structure of what he feels will be an 'implementation
committee' of the recommendations. |
| He added he was "in complete agreement" with the
eight principles created by the committee, and of the so-called seven
point plan presented to council in October, the only discussion which
needed to take place was about the need to hire a community development
expert. |
