Staying Home on June 28th?
2 June 2004
Collingwood Now Special - Todd Wesley Johnson
Are you planning to stay at home and not cast your ballot on June 28th because you are fed-up with Canada's political system, disenchanted with the governing party but afraid of the alternative, believe Canada desparately deserves electoral and political reform? You can make a difference, but you can't stay at home!
Instead, head down to your assigned polling station, accept your ballot, and hand it to the electoral officer, stating you would like to 'register a vote of decline.'
By accepting your ballot, your name is checked off the voter's list (you voted) and your 'declined ballot' is placed in a separate envelope, and it is counted separately! [Total Ballots Cast = Valid Ballots + Rejected Ballets] (these are not the so-called Spoiled Ballots which are not counted)
In the 2000 General Election, this method was used to great effect in the province of Quebec, when 2.7% of ballots cast where declined!
If enough Canadian voters register a vote of decline the message to the individual candidates and to the government will be loud and clear... Its time for real change!
