What is CHAOS IN AUGUST: TIME
OF REJUVINATION?
Our current mandate is to build & strengthen communities rooted in social
and environmental justice and we do this by providing a space for
politicized groups & activists to meet, gather, rejuvinate and plot the
revolution. Currently the space is used on weekends by groups, primarily
people who already know one another. Chaos in August is an attempt to
introduce and bring together new people --hence the theory of "chaos" of
meaningful unpatterned encounters that can lead to something brilliant in
the future.
Objective of CHAOS
- to foster community rooted in principles of social & environmental justice
- to expose new people to the organization (both community and property)
- to celebrate, rejuvinate and thereby facilitate the revolution
When is it?
Thursday August 5th to Monday August 16th, 2004. Our grassroots
intergenerational cross-genre music festival MusiChaos is Friday August 13th
- Sunday August 15th.

How much does it cost?
Our objective is to keep this event as close to free
as humanly possible. We are asking $5-$20 sliding scale per day/night
for us to recover operating costs (and significantly less for those who plan
to stay the full week). Limited full subsidies and work exchange
opportunities are available. We ask people to consider giving more if they
are able, as we do hope to keep the place running for future things like
this (which we hope to do annually). Those who receive rides may wish to
consider subsidizing gas expenses for the ride if it is within their means.
The sliding scale figure covers use of the land, kitchen, facilities,
accommodation. Some play-shops and film screenings and group field trips may
require additional money, this is up to the facilitiator, be sure to read
the descriptions.
Accessibility is a paramount value at Kimbercote. No one will be denied
accomodation do to lack of financial resources.
In addition to your
fee/donation/payment each community member is expected to contribute a
minimum of 2 hours of labour per 3 day stay. Aside from helping to keep the
cost of this project down, workshifts help you to connect with other people
and connect with a sense of community within the Chaos. A very special part
of how we build this connection with each other is that we, the community
members, provide basic services for one another. Sign-up sheets will give an
idea of any special skills required or job limitations for a particular
workshift, and the time segments each area needs filled.
Note: from
Friday August 13th, Saturday August 14th & Sunday August 15th is MusiChaos
our grassroots intergenerational cross-genre music festival. During this
time there is camping only (although there are limited spaces available in
the retreat centre for people with special needs). The suggested donation
for the weekend is $20 inclusive for camping, music, workshops plus a bag of
produce for the community "Kimber-kitchen". The music festival is entirely
volunteer driven, with a budget of $1000 --of which we hope to break even.
How can I get there?
Some
transportation from across the province is available with advance notice.
There are limited seats available in shuttles leaving from Toronto. To
reserve a space call 1-888-862-3588 or email chaos@kimbercote.org Please
consider giving a $10 (pwyc) contribution to help cover our costs.
Other options include:
- take either a
Greyhound Bus (www.greyhound.ca) or Penetang-Midland Coach Line Bus line to
Thornbury Ontario. Thornbury is a 10 minute drive from Kimbercote Farm
--call us in advance of your arrival if you need to be picked up.
- carpool with your
friends. if you have space in your car let us know, we may know someone who
needs a ride and can contribute towards fuel.
- bike! call us for
route suggestions.
What can I do when I get there?
There will be core projects such as:
- organic gardening
- labryinth meditation
- radical media lab set up
- more cool projects yet unconfirmed
plus special happenings such as a film night, a no talent show, field trips
to local communities
plus of course our intergenerational cross-genre MUSIC FESTIVAL (August 13,
14, and 15th)
and most importantly
play-shops and DIY skillshares, facilitated by the people who
are visiting and living in the community (you!) A list of confirmed
workshops will be posted on our web site very shortly!
Food
We ask everyone to bring a bag of produce. Veggies like carrots, onions,
potatoes, greens are always good. So is fruit. Consider contributing soymilk
and tofu if you can afford to. Food will be gathered as people come and
cooked collectively. The 'Kimber-Kitchen' is a Food-not-Bombs like
collective who will coordinate kitchen work duties (plus we will have sign
up sheets). Please let us know about food allergies and food needs in
advance of your stay so we can accomodate --so you can eat! All meals
will be vegetarian and there will always be wheat free and vegan options.
There will be designated cooking areas/grills available for people who
choose to bring and cook their own meat.
Stuff
People will be required to bring the necessities of life - including
sleeping bag or bedding - and a tent/sleeping bag if they are camping. They
can contact us if they don't have access to these things, and we will try
and help out. We encourage folks to aim to live simply and bring stuff which
will minimize noise, water consumption, electricity consumption, general
waste, overpackaging, etc. But with that said, Kimbercote is located in a
very remote location. The closest convenience store is a 15 minute drive,
pharmacy is 30 minutes away. Be sure to bring enough chocolate, cigarettes
and medications. The staff do not have the capacity to make unnecessary
trips into town.
Please bring
environmentally friendly soaps. No laundry service on site. Kimbercote is
scent free so please leave artificial perfumes, hand creams & the like at
home.
Childcare will not be
provided but a space will be made available for self-organized childcare
provision.
Cigarette smoking is
strictly prohibited on Kimbercote property except in designated areas (this
is primarily to prevent littering of butts and unplanned fires).
When people arrive
they will be expected to come to a brief orientation to the time they are
there so that organizers can establish collective norms and ethos of the
community. Antioppression workshops will be offered (voluntary but strongly
encouraged).
We will do our best to
live on a consensus decision making model and may be required to have
meetings if issues (say around food, noise, rowdiness, cleaning up, etc)
come up, which all participants are required to attend. There will be a
daily opening and, when possible, closing circle.
There are several
exceptions to consensus decision making being our way of
operating. these are:
· complaints and response around sexual harassment and sexual abuse, where
organizers reserve the right to engage in their own process.
· any decisions which cause long-term or irreversible change to the land,
ecology or facilities.
· any decisions which Kimbercote or Caledon contemporaries could be held
legally liable for.
Community Norms
- to strive for a space free of all the nasty -isms - including racism,
sexism, heterosexism, ableism, classism, religionism, homophobia, etc. An
ombudsperson will be available should an incident occur.
- sexual harassment and sexual abuse will not be tolerated.
- general respect for all people and groups - including a respect for a
diversity of approaches, cultural norms, expressions, etc.
- respect for the land - leaving things as they were - respect of property
boundaries (so we can keep doing this).
- respect for clean space - clean up after oneself. keep common spaces truly
common.
- fires must be restricted to one or both firepits.
- [we have to say that] illegal substances are not allowed on the land.
respectful and responsible alcohol consumption is okay but lets not get
stupid and cause problems with alcohol. bring your own alcohol if you choose
to drink.
- pets are not permitted on site (sight dogs excepted)
- from 2-4pm will be a collective cleanup time, most days will be shorter
than that! everyone is expected to participate in this cleanup of facilities
and land at this time
- anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult guardian or parent.
children are welcome, but guardians/parents are ultimately responsible for
their under 18ers.
- failure to live by these norms means that you will be asked to leave at
your own expense.
When people arrive,
they will be asked to 'register' and sign a waiver form. If you would like
this information to be destroyed after the event, please let us know. if you
would like to keep in touch, and know about future
events like this, we can do that too.
Are you excited?! So are we!
Over the next couple of weeks we will be posting the finer details as they
are confirmed. To be added to our announcement list email
chaos@kimbercote.org or keep
checking back for regular updates.
And if you have extra time, we could use some help on the organizing
committee
