211 may expand in Simcoe
County
2 September 2007'211' is a
free call to get information on community, social and health services in
your area.
A centre in Collingwood currently serves
the town as well as Wasaga Beach and Clearview Township.
They get about 50 calls a day.
Now there are plans to expand 211 to all
of Simcoe County.
That would mean the centre would need 40
trained counsellors -- there are only 11 in the office now.
Bill Morrison of United Way is the
Manager of the 211 Ontario Initiative.
He made a presentation to Simcoe County
Council on Tuesday asking for 141 thousand dollars to make the expansion
work.
The County has decided to postpone this
until budget talks start at a special meeting on October 31st.
County Warden Tony Geurgis says they
support this initative, but always want to be careful when the money may
have to come from taxpayers.
Geurgis says if they can't get the money
from a reseve fund, there's a chance there could be a one per cent tax
increase.
Morrison says in many cases the overall
cost to the taxpayer is a dollar a person per year.
Morrison says they have also asked the
province to cover 60 per cent of the cost -- but have received no word
yet.
The United Way would fund 10 percent and
the County 20 per cent with the remaining 10 coming from the Federal
government. |
