Wasaga Beach hit by fire
November 30, 2007
A massive fire tore through a seasonal strip mall in a popular tourist
area of Wasaga Beach overnight.
Calls came in around 1 a.m. that a fire had broken out at the Main Street
Mall in Beach Area One, at Spruce and Mosley Sts. in the popular tourist
destination located about 130 kilometres north of Toronto
Between 50 and 70 per cent of the mall’s buildings, a number of which date
back to the 1950s, have been destroyed or damaged, according to OPP Const.
Mark Kinney.
No injuries have been reported.
“We were very fortunate it is seasonal properties so they were empty,”
said Kinney.
The area, which was slated for redevelopment, houses businesses that sell
clothing and other merchandise during the summer months.
Up to 70 firefighters were called to the scene from Wasaga, Tiny,
Collingwood, Springwater, Essa and Clearview as the blaze raged out of
control for several hours before it was contained in the early morning
hours.
Wasaga Fire Department spokesperson Sgt. Lauren Thompson said there were
no reports of injuries and that it was too early to tell what sparked the
fire.
