Marketwire - On behalf of all Canadians, I congratulate Canada's junior women's hockey team on their performance in yesterday's gold medal game at the 2008 IIHF World Women's Under-18 Championship in Calgary, Alberta.

We are all proud of the outstanding efforts made by our junior women's hockey team. Our athletes are an inspiration to all Canadians. These young women have demonstrated their talent and dedication to a sport that they, like so many Canadians, are so passionate about.

The 2008 IIHF World Women's Under-18 Championship is the first ever world championship held at the women's Under-18 level, with eight teams-Canada, the United States, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Switzerland, Russia and the Czech Republic-taking part in the six-day tournament.

Our Government is proud of Canadian women athletes in each and every sport in which they compete as they represent the country on the international stage.

As Secretary of State (Foreign Affairs and International Trade) (Sport) and on behalf of the Government of Canada, I would also like to thank Hockey Canada for all the work it does to develop generation after generation of the best players in the world. Yesterday's silver medal performance is further proof of their success.
