University astronomers seek Georgian Bay
space rocks
Collingwood Now... 5 March

A
fireball in the sky over Parry Sound, Ont., late on Wednesday night was
a meteor, chunks of which probably embedded themselves in the frozen
surface of Georgian Bay, astronomers at the University of Western
Ontario said yesterday. They are asking people near Parry Sound: Have
you seen this space rock? A video camera tracked the fireball and the
footage is helping pinpoint landing spots. Western has a network of
automated cameras in southern Ontario that watch for meteors, which
weigh approximately one kilogram. Astronomers at the university also
handed out a map to locals in the landing zone. Astronomers love to
examine meteorites, such as the one pictured, because they are samples
from other parts of the solar system, sometimes carrying organic
chemicals such as amino acids.
